On Tournament of Roses Day in South Pasadena, 1892, guests are seated in Thaddeus Lowe’s personal tallyho at the grand entrance of the Royal Raymond. The rose-laden tallyho is about to depart for a splendid ride in the newly formed Tournament of Roses Parade hosted by the Valley Hunt Club.
Note: A short distance from the winter resort hotel, Professor Thaddeus Lowe (famed Civil War balloonist and builder of the Mt. Lowe Railroad) constructed the Lowe Opera House. Walter Raymond’s wife Hattie performed there in the light opera’s “Erminie” and “Princess Bonnie.” She was a soprano soloist with the Los Angeles Symphony and frequently sang at the hotel much to the delight of the guests.
Throwback Thursday is written and produced by Rick Thomas.
