The Elliott Caine Quintet plays Vroman’s Bookstore

The Elliott Caine Quintet (EC-trumpet, Scott Gilman-tenor sax, Peter Smith-piano, Bill Markus-bass, Kenny Elliott-drums) performs at the courtyard of Vroman’s Bookstore, 659 East Colorado Blvd., Pasadena CA 91101, on Sunday, July 9, from 5 – 7pm, kicking off the Pasadena Playhouse District’s Jazz Summer Concert Series.  There is no cover charge.

Elliott Caine is a local South Pasadenan who hails from Indianapolis. He studied with the renowned David Baker while a student at Indiana University. In Indianapolis, Elliott performed with the Jimmy Coe Big Band, which also featured Ermin Hubbard, brother of Freddie Hubbard.

After moving to Los Angeles, Elliott performed and/or recorded with, among many others, Teddy Edwards, Ernie Andrews, OC Smith, Al McKibbon, Barbara Morrison, Sweet Baby Jai, Francisco Aguabella, The Machito Orchestra, Bobby Matos, Estrada Brothers, La Sonora Dinamita, El Vez, Wyclef Jean, Beck, The Beastie Boys, Tierra, The Solsonics, Jump With Joey, comedian-singer, Joey Cheezhee, which included appearances on Entertainment Tonight and an HBO special, On The Ledge, and the notorious, Dr. Jack Kevorkian (CD entitled, A Very Still Life). Elliott performed in one of the centennial celebrations of Kurt Weill’s birth in a concert entitled, Nina Wachenfeld Sings Kurt Weill. Elliott was also part of the orchestra featured at the LA House of Blues presentation, Andy Kaufman: Dead or Alive?.

Inspired by ’60’s “Blue Note” style jazz, as well as by the music of Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria, The Elliott Caine Sextet plays original compositions, as well as the works of Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, et al. The group’s critically acclaimed first release, Orientation, has received generous radio airplay across the USA. Elliott’s original compositions from the cd have been used for television and cinema, including Relax…It’s Just Sex, starring Jennifer Tilly and Paul Winfield.

Le Supercool, the 2nd cd release by the Elliott Caine Sextet, further explores musical ideas initiated with Orientation. Released in early 2001, Le Supercool received impressive notice nationally and internationally, attaining the rank of 14 for jazz radioplay in the USA in early February 2001. The 3rd cd release, Blues from Mars, by the Elliott Caine Quintet, features DJ Bonebrake on vibes on three selections, adding yet another texture to the sound of the group. “Blues from Mars” was released in the summer of 2006, and likewise has received much national and international radio play and positive reviews, including in Jazz Times Magazine, Latin Beat Magazine, All About Jazz (LA edition), Cadence Magazine, LA Jazz Scene, Sonic Magazine (Germany), Swing Journal (Japan), and numerous other magazines and ezines and blogs.   The latest cd release, Hippie Chicks on Acid, released in  2011, is a “live”, in-concert recording, likewise, has received both national and international radio-play, as well as very positive media coverage.

This list of accolades is long with many of Elliott’s original compositions being used in film, television and theatre. You can catch Elliott this Sunday at Vromen’s and South Pasadenans will have another up close and personal chance to see him on September 7 when he will be playing at our own Blue Guitar as part of the Thursday night jazz series put on at the Arroyo Seco Golf Club.
