In it’s very successful second year, the internship now boasts 38 employers with 95 interns placed. There are 187 students who have completed the internship training with 60 more being trained in May. If you are interested in a summer internship there is still time as the workshops will take place May 22 & 24. And if you are an employer seeking summer interns, time is of the essence to contact Andrea Fox, fill out the paperwork which is due June 1 and set up interviews shortly after that.  The summer program runs June 18-July 20.

Superintendent Geoff Yantz said that he, Fox and Christiane Gervais (head of instruction) are over the moon at the rapid growth of the program saying “it has far exceeded our expectations and we are grateful to the employers who have opened their businesses to our students. We couldn’t be more pleased, so thank you.”

Fox went on to express her excitement and gratitude saying, “thank you to our employers for giving these opportunities to our students.” She spoke about the wonderful seminars offered to the students throughout the program where people, like Mr. West from Priority One Credit Union, who come in to speak on specific subjects like financial literacy and how to save for your future. The students also learn skills such as interviewing, resume writing and other job skills.

When asked what employers could do to help make the intern experience a positive one, Fox explained “the students really want to feel that they are doing something of value and helping your business in a very real way.”

Fox says the summer does see an increase in participation as the students have more time and availability, so she foresees a large number of students looking for those internships. Fox mentioned that there is a special need for any medical and science internships at this time but of course all types of businesses are encouraged to participate.
