A chance to play for the CIF water polo championship will be at stake Wednesday evening as South Pasadena High School prepares to play Redondo Union of Redondo Beach in a key semifinal match at Pasadena City College.
South Pas will square off against Redondo Union at 5 p.m. The team coming out on top will face the winner of today’s other semifinal match between Walnut and Temple City. The CIF championship game is scheduled for Saturday at Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine. The time of the finals has not been announced.
The Tigers earned the opportunity to play in the semifinals after Dominic Kline scored two goals late in the fourth quarter against Santa Monica last Saturday at South Pasadena High after the score was knotted 7-7.
South Pas enters today’s match with a 25-10 overall record, including an 8-2 mark in Rio Hondo League play. Both league losses were to frontrunner Temple City. Redondo Union, a 6-3 winner over Santiago in the other quarterfinal match, comes into today’s semifinal match with a 20-10 record.
“It will take a total effort in concentration and composure,” said Tigers’ water polo coach Michael Gonzales when asked what it’s going to take to get past the Sea Hawks. “We need to communicate well defensively. We need to move well in space and attack with confidence. We preach this all the time – we can’t be afraid to succeed.”
