SPHS DANCE Presents Phenomenal Woman – Thursday Dec. 7

On the evening of Thursday December 7, South Pasadena High School Dance Department is performing their 2017 Winter Dance Concert entitled Phenomenal Woman at the SPHS Auditorium at 7pm. Thirty dancers are performing thirteen dance pieces, two short videos, and there will be a special performance by the SPHS Tiger Marching Band and Color Guard.

Dance Department director, Courtney Cheyne, explains that Phenomenal Woman is the final product following a series of lectures discussing the importance of performance for social change. Says Cheyne, “our hope is that when people walk out of the auditorium, not only women, but all, will feel empowered.”

Senior Claire Kucera says, “the pieces all have to do with women’s rights and female empowerment; the struggles women go through and it’s really about the movement that’s going on right now.” She tells us there are pieces about the glass ceiling and women’s suffrage and that every piece has something to say. “This show is really special to us, as young women, to be able to express this because it’s something that every young girl should believe and know,” said Kucera.

The concerts consists of modern contemporary, ballet, and tap pieces. The enthusiasm for this concert from the dancers and Cheyne is palpable as the dance department continues to grow and evolve at the high school. General admission is $10 at the door, $7 with school SAC card. Box office opens at 6:30pm. South Pasadena High School 1401 Fremont Avenue, South Pasadena.
