The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) is pleased to present the exhibition Simulacra – Works by Colin Glasgow at SPARC Gallery, located at the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce on Mission Street.  Sam Mellon of the South Pasadena curatorial design firm MICRONAUT organized the exhibition.

The opening artist’s reception will be held during the Arts Crawl on Saturday October 21 from 6-8pm and the show will run through November 17.

Simulacra, Latin for images or representations of something, seeks to explore concepts of paradise, simulation, reality and where the three concepts intersect in images that are at once representations of our environs and historic representations of paradise.  The works shown here are research-driven, yet materially based experiments which focus on questions of historical influence on cultural norms and a contemporary disconnect with the world around us.

Representations of paradise have an established art historical presence, especially here in Los Angeles.  Many of the images that surround us today meant to imply prosperity and ease and are echoed in the constructed environment we inhabit today.  This fabrication of historic ideals falls within the purview of contemporary philosophy, identifying a blurring distinction between simulation and so-called reality.  The body of work in this show is a visual reflection on that blurred line and it’s significance in contemporary society, what the physical manifestation of paradise means for both us and our environment, and why we are so fascinated with paradise to begin with.

Colin Glasgow is a Kansas City artist living and working in Los Angeles. His materially driven work explores and critiques themes of paradise archetypes, the hyperreal, anarcho-primitivism, and current trends in cultural ecology.
