A full house dined on Chinese delicacies Friday afternoon as the South Pasadena Chinese American Club presented it annual Chinese New Year celebration at the War Memorial Building in the city.
“Happy Chinese New Year, Gong hay Fat Choy,” South Pasadena City Councilmember Robert Joe told the large gathering, enjoying an array of lunch items before being treated to a variety Chinese dancers performing in colorful outfits.
During his brief remarks, Joe said Lunar New Year is the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar. “2018 is the year of the dog, which is the 11th of all zodiac animals,” he explained. “Dogs are honest and loyal, the truest friends and the most reliable partner you’ll ever find.”
Recent years of the dog include: 1922, 1934, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 and now 2018. “Everyone needs a dog friend for advice and help,” continued Joe of beloved canines. “They are also good at helping others find and fix their bad habits. Despite how they act, they are worried and anxious inside. However, they will not let this stop them. Once they decide on something, no one can persuade them against it.”
Joe reminded luncheon guests that Chinese New Year is a time for family and friends to get together and wish each other good health, luck and prosperity, and much happiness throughout the coming year.
Making a special appearance was Congresswoman Judy Chu, whose 27th District represents South Pasadena. “I’m so thrilled that the South Pasadena Chinese American Club does this event and donates a free lunch to seniors to celebrate the Lunar New Year, which is the most important day in all of Asia” she said. “All the businesses close down. Families visit each other. It’s a time for renewal and to sweep out the old and bring in the new. To celebrate these cultures with all of South Pasadena is just fantastic.”
