With thanks to Mayor Pro Tem Marina Khubesrian, M.D. and her 2017 discretionary funds that purchased the Hydroponic Garden Tower for the South Pasadena Senior Center, many older adults and disabled persons have benefited from hydroponically-grown herbs and vegetables.

The Hydroponic Garden Tower is maintained by volunteers, Gary Farrar and Rudy Avila Garcia, who check often on the very plants they grew from seedlings to ensure that these plants are well nourished, hand-picked, and served fresh at the daily senior lunch.

So far, Gary and Rudy have grown parsley, basil, and cilantro that are used in salad preparation. They are also growing kale, spinach, broccoli, and tomatoes that will be used both in lunch preparation as well as given away to those who attend the luncheons.
