Seattle Construction Crane Collapse | South Pasadena Girl Died

Sarah Wong, the daughter of Henry and Andrea Wong, and sister of Aaron, all longtime South Pasadena residents, died at the scene.

A South Pasadena resident was among the casualties Saturday afternoon after a construction crane fell from a building onto Google’s new Seattle campus during a fierce storm, crashing down on a busy street below and killing four individuals.

Sarah Wong is the daughter of Henry Wong and Andrea Wang, and sister of Aaron, all longtime South Pasadena residents. Sarah succumbed to her injuries on the scene in Seattle.

Sarah Wong, along with another passenger, was inside a car on Mercer Street when the crane came tumbling down onto the vehicle. According to authorities, Wong died at the scene while the other person was able to escape unharmed but is deeply shaken following the accident and the loss of Sarah.

Wong was a freshman with an intended major in nursing at Seattle Pacific University and attended South Pasadena schools.

Her father Henry Wong is a past president of the South Pasadena Kiwanis Club.

Sarah Wong and three males passed away following the 3:30 p.m. incident. Two who died were ironworkers inside the crane while the two others were inside cars.

The accident took place near the heavily congested intersection of Mercer and Fairview Avenue just north of downtown in the South Lake Union District in Seattle Washington.

Wong was a student at South Pasadena High School during her freshman year, took part in track and field on campus, before graduating from Futures Academy, a private school in Pasadena.

The student in the car with Wong was also a student at Seattle Pacific University.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our students passed away in the crane accident in Seattle on April 27. Sarah Wong was in a car on Mercer Street when the crane fell. She was a freshman with an intended major in nursing and lived on campus. While we grieve the sudden and tragic loss of our precious student, we draw comfort from each other, our strong community of faith, and God’s presence with us in times of sorrow. We ask that the community join us in praying for Sarah’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
