With a score of 44-12, SPHS Senior Class of 2018 beat the Junior Class of 2019 at the annual Powder Puff game held Friday, March 9 at South Pasadena High School’s Roosevelt Field. Historically the seniors do usually win, but the score really isn’t the point so much as just the sheer fun of the game.
The Powder Puff game is a tradition where the girls get to show their stuff on the football field while the boys coach as well as strut their inner cheerleader on the sidelines, with both assisting one another with strategy, skills and make-up techniques!
It is a friendly flag football game between junior and senior girls and is sponsored by the Associated Student Body. The teams are coached by same grade level football players and although it’s a fun, friendly game, make no mistake, competitive spirit does kick in!
Senior Riley Segal led the scoring with a whopping four touchdowns and was first to put points on the board, giving the seniors the early lead. Several familiar faces from girls soccer CIF championship team like juniors Rainey Tilley and Uma Hornish played aggressively on their side as the juniors put 12 points on the board taking the score to 26-12 seniors going into halftime.
The crowd was boisterous and loving it and really got crazy as the “Manleaders” performed their halftime show to a wild mashup of Single Ladies, Soulja Boy, Take On Me, and Holla Back Girl! Manleader Jackson Totleben said “it was really fun seeing the reaction to our halftime performance!”
The sizable lead proved too hard to overcome and after two more touchdowns in the 2nd half by Segal, the Class of 2018 claimed victory.
Senior player Cate Latting tells us, “Powder Puff is one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in high school. It’s so great to bond with your classmates while you learn something new together. The junior rivalry is very present and we tease each other a lot but, at the end of the day, nobody cares who wins. It’s just a way to have fun with your friends.”
