Looking for a Few Good Ears and Eyes

South Pasadena Neighborhood Watch seeks new members

The teenage self defense class

I recently attended the annual Neighborhood Watch (NW) Block Captain meeting hosted by the South Pasadena Police Department. They’re looking to widen membership to raise awareness and engage the entire community. If your block is not already participating, I highly recommend joining. I live in a condo building and we’re our own “block”.

Started in 1972, Neighborhood Watch encourages residents to improve the quality of life in their area by working with their neighbors and Police to: protect yourself, your family, and your property, protect your neighbor’s family and property, recognize and report suspicious activities and crimes, and identify issues in your area and work with SPPD to solve them. As a NW member, you’ll receive crime bulletins, a weekly crime summary report, monthly newsletter, signs for your street and more. For more information, contact Detective Richard Lee at (626) 403-7285, or rlee@southpasadenaca.gov.

At the meeting we learned as of May 31, crime in general is down 8.58%. Community involved SPPD programs include the Public Safety Commission and the Citizens Academy. Upcoming training events include Women and Teen Self Defense training (Aug 19 & 26, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/1590627247677082/?active_tab=about for information on the teen class), Community Emergency Response Training (next session is Oct 7, 14 & 21), Personal Safety, Vehicle Security, Child Safety, Scams and Cons, Identity Theft, etc.
