Want to turn your yard into a source of production rather than consumption? The community is invited to learn about urban homesteading in a lively, illustrated lecture by local author Erik Knutzen at South Pasadena Beautiful’s Annual Meeting in the Library Community Room at 1115 El Centro Street on Saturday, June 3, at 3:30pm. Mr. Knutzen will discuss urban sustainability: raising chickens, bees, and vegetables and the home arts. He will also touch on the benefits of native plants and ways to save water and energy. Erik Knutzen is the co-author, with his wife Kelly Coyne, of The Urban Homestead and Making It: Radical Home Economics for a Post-Consumer World and runs the website rootsimple.com.
South Pasadena Beautiful will also honor this year’s Golden Arrow Award winners. Eight residences and St. James Episcopal Church will be recognized for their outstanding job of planning and maintaining their properties and for the care they have taken as they invoke a new waterwise way of life. The bright golden arrows, created by Foothill Trophy & Engraving, will be placed at the properties until mid-June.
South Pasadena Beautiful is grateful for its member’s loyalty and commitment to improving the appearance of the city. This year’s generous membership donations enabled SPB to plant 72 trees, to provide free community lectures on tree maintenance, gardening with natives, and urban homesteading, to carry out several beautification projects including painting over graffitied walls, and to host the 47th annual free garden tour and plant swap.
Upcoming fall 2017 projects include the re-landscaping of the Library Park near the Community Room and the beautification of medians and other public spaces. SPB will also offer more tree maintenance workshops and will resume its Tree Drive in which residents help reforest our Tree City USA by funding the planting of a dedication tree.
