In the past week, Geoff Yantz visited a pair of dual language immersion classes at two local elementary schools and watched as young students spoke Spanish or Mandarin
He came away in awe.
“It’s impressive to see what the students are doing, especially to hear the English-only students speak Spanish or Chinese,” said the superintendent of the South Pasadena Unified School District.
Through the dual language Immersion program, now in its fourth year, Spanish is offered at Monterey Hills Elementary School and Mandarin at Marengo Elementary School.
The aim is to have students speak, read and write in two languages and learn about cultural in each country.
“We’ve had a great deal of support from the community,” added Yantz, noting that there’s a high demand for the classes from parents who are invited to a dual language immersion program information meeting on February 6 for classes starting in the fall. The hour-long session starts at 6 p.m. in the SPUSD Board Room, 1020 El Centro St. in the city.
“The room is always full from interested parents who would like to consider enrolling their children in the program,” said Yantz. “The information night is to let them know what it’s all about.”
