JPL Engineer Sandy Krasner spoke at the Saturday WISPPA meeting, sharing powerful information on how and why Climate Change is indeed happening, what we are doing and can do about it. Krasner was adamant, saying that the science is undeniable that climate change is happening. All the gathered research from around the world shows the temperatures fluctuating mildly over several thousands of years. However, starting around 1900, the temperatures rise consistently and dramatically. On a chart, it resembles a hockey stick. What this has meant is rising sea levels and extreme weather.
What that means to us here in California is the extreme drought we have experienced, which has led to fires which then leads to flash flooding. Krasner points out that our water infrastructure is not designed to accommodate these flash floods as we saw at the Oroville Dam breach.
We are also seeing ecosystems disrupted causing the spread northward of West Nile Virus and Zika.
The scientists say the 6th great extinction is underway called Anthropocene, the extinction of species mostly due to human activity.
It looks hopeless, but Krasner says there are things we can do. Citizens Climate Lobby is one of the main organizations lobbying congress to adopt a pollution fee on fossil fuels. The idea is to place the fee at the source that is proportional to the CO2 content, with the goal being to encourage renewable energy. The fees are deposited in a common trust and 100% of it will go to households in the form of a rebate totaling $3500 per household in the 10th year. It incentivizes clean tech businesses and is a great business opportunity.
Citizens Climate Lobby has 525 chapters in all 50 states, working hard at outreach and lobbying Congressmembers across the country.
