Simon quickly grabbed the attention of South Pasadena City Council members Wednesday night, attempting to eat the microphone, as the dog’s handler, Jack Hagerman from the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA, showcased the latest canine up for adoption.

“He’s not one you would describe as a wallflower,” said a laughing Hagerman of the 2-year-old Chihuahua mix snipping at the mike. “He’s got a lot of personality.”

A frisky Simon was the center of attention as council members observed the dog’s liveliness.

“He still has a lot of puppy energy, so he would do well with a family with kids,” explained Hagerman. “He’s very active and is a really, really sweet boy. He’s never met a person or another animal he didn’t like.”

Or a microphone, as South Pasadena Mayor Dr. Diana Mahmud came down from her seat to assist Hagerman by holding Simon while he talked.

Simon has been at the animal shelter since December and might still be available to those attending the Pasadena Humane Society’s free pet adoption event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at 361 S. Raymond Avenue in Pasadena.

The adoption fee, which will be waived, includes spay, neuter, up-to-date vaccinations and a microchip for permanent electronic identification.

“It’s a really good value,” said Hagerman, noting that it was National Love Your Pet Day on Wednesday. “So, if you have a pet at home, we encourage your to give a few extra treats today.”
