Looking invincible through the regular season and the playoffs, the Dodgers bullpen fell victim to Houston’s late inning power Wednesday night as the Astros came away with a 7-6 victory in 11 innings in Game 2 of the World Series.
With the defeat at home, the Dodgers lost home field advantage as the Series, tied 1-1, now shifts to Houston Friday night for games 3, 4, and 5.
There were a major league eight home runs in the contest, the biggest coming off the bat of the Astros’ George Springer in the 11th, giving Houston a 7-5 lead. The Dodgers homered in the bottom of the inning but it wasn’t enough as the rally fell short.
The game was tied 1-1 in the sixth when Corey Seager gave the Dodgers a two-run lead with a blast over the wall in left field. The Astros answered with a run in the eighth and in the top of the ninth Dodgers’ closer Kenley Jansen, flawless throughout the playoffs, gave up a game-tying homer to Marwin Gonzalez.
The Dodgers bullpen collapsed in the 10th as reliever Josh Fields gave up back to back homers to Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, giving Houston a 5-3 lead.
A relentless Dodger squad came back in the bottom of the 10th on a Yasiel Puig homer and an Enrique Hernandez RBI single, scoring Logan Forsythe to tie it a five apiece. An inning later, Springer hit his two-run homer before the Dodgers’ Charlie Colberson cut the Astros lead to one with a solo blast with two outs in the 11th.
A special moment took place before the game as former Dodger broadcaster and legend Vin Scully, along with Dodger players from the past, Steve Yeager and Fernando Valenzuela, took part in first pitch honors. Adding to the excitement, Scully asked the crowd to join him in his signature phrase: “It’s time for Dodgers base” as the game was about to get underway.
The World Series continues Friday night as Yu Darvish will head to the mound for the Dodgers and Lance McCullers pitches for Houston.
