A ‘Baseball Night’ showcasing the photographic art of Jon SooHoo, official photographer for the Los Angeles Dodgers, was presented last August in the Library Community Room. Mr. SooHoo, the Dodgers’ photographer since 1985, shared many of his favorite snapshots, including many permanently etched into the iconography of LA baseball history.

Mr. SooHoo, a former South Pasadena resident, was joined onstage for the presentation by Mark Langill, the Dodgers’ historian, who grew up and lives in South Pasadena. The 200 audience members, most of whom were clad in blue, started lining up an hour before the event that was co-sponsored by the Library, the Friends of the Library, and the South Pasadena Chinese American Club.

The lively onstage patter between Misters SooHoo and Langill describing so many precious Dodgers moments and events of Dodgers was greeted with the audience cheering at every turn. Those in attendance were treated to an hour and a half program during which hundreds of on-the- field and behind-the-scenes photos were projected onto the giant film festival-type screen.

Over the holidays, Jon SooHoo donated two of his very special oversized books to the Library for its Local History collection. “Vin Scully: The 67th Season and More” and “My First Thirty Seasons in Images: Los Angeles Dodgers” are both opulent oversized art books that beautifully reproduce a bounty of images taken at Dodger Stadium, the White House, Capitol Records in Hollywood and other storied locations during historic games and events. The rare books have never been available commercially but will soon be available to be enjoyed only inside the Library by fans who leave their driver’s license at the reference desk while they are using the books.

On a related note for Dodgers fans, play-by-play broadcaster Joe Davis, another South Pasadena resident, will be in conversation in the Library Community Room on Monday, January 29 at 7 pm. Doors for the very special event open at 6:30. Those interested are advised to arrive around that time as space is limited. The free event is presented by the South Pasadena Public Library and the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library. The Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro Street and refreshments will be served.
