The body of missing 5-year-old Aramazd Andressian Jr. was found dead near Lake Cachuma in Santa Barbara on Friday, ending a 10-week search by over 20 law enforcement agencies around Southern California. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives located the remains the same day as lead suspect Aramazd Andressian Sr., the victim’s father, was officially extradited from Nevada back to California. Andressian Sr. is reported to be arraigned this Monday at the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
The disappointing news comes just days after Andressian Sr. was officially charged with murder by District Attorney Jackie Lacey and her office. The charge was announced to the public before Andressian Jr.’s body was found, which prompted some speculation as to whether or not the trial would be successful in convicting Andressian Sr. The discovery of the body, however, is a huge step forward in closing the case.
Andressian Sr. had been in Las Vegas for 47 days before being arrested on suspicion of murder. He had dyed his hair blond and shaved his beard, which LACSD Homicide Bureau Lieutenant Joe Mendoza stated was a significant attempt to change his appearance. The Department believes Andressian Sr. was making plans to flee the country to a place where he could not be extradited. Mendoza also stated that the alleged motive for the suspected murder was a “tumultuous divorce” that the parents were going through and they believe that the father had planned it in advance.
Andressian Sr. is facing a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
