Black Box at South Pasadena Middle School

School Board Approves Conceptual Layout

South Pasadena Board of Education members approved the conceptual layout last week for the old middle school gymnasium.

Plans are in the works renovate the gym to become a black box theater, a performing space that, according to Wikipedia, consists of a simple, somewhat unadorned performance space, in the form of a large square room with black walls and a flat floor.

“It will have flexible seating for audience members,” explained South Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Geoff Yantz.  “You can do a variety of different configurations with respect to theatre-in-the-round or a traditional seating arrangement.”

The space will be used for everything from lectures to dance performance where only basic technical arrangements are required.

As well as being flexible in terms of seating, Yantz said the space will be a “much more intimate arrangement, where you can have 20, 30, 40 up to 70 people in there at any given time designed to provide a great theatre experience.”

Interiors to most black box theaters, according to Wikipedia, are black to give audience members a sense of “anyplace,” allowing flexibility from play-to-play or from scene-to-scene.
